Abimelech - A Slave to Sin
 Gideon had many wives and many children. Seventy sons came from the many wives of Gideon, but one son came from a concubine of Gideon. Concubines were second-class wives. They weren’t considered as important and were often treated like slaves. The children of concubines were not treated like real sons and daughters. Abimelech was Gideon’s son of Gideon’s concubine and was never treated like one of Gideon’s sons. As a result, he hated the other sons of Gideon and planned to kill his brothers to make himself king.

Gideon Dies, Israel Forgets the Lord
Gideon died and the children of the Israelites grew up and forgot the Lord their God. We know from the bible that there are two main reasons this happened to Israel and can happen today. The first reason Israel fell away from the Lord is that all people are born with an evil heart. This doesn’t mean that people are as evil as they can be, but it does mean that everything people do, from the time of their birth, is affected by sin. Bible teachers call this problem Total Depravity. Total Depravity means that everything we do is affected by sin. It doesn’t mean that we are as evil as we can be, but it does mean that there isn’t one thing we do that is unaffected by sin. Unless God changes our spiritual heart, we will always want what is wrong.
